Donor Advised Fund (DAF)
What is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)?
A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a philanthropic vehicle that allows individuals, families, and organizations to make charitable contributions, receive immediate tax benefits, and then recommend grants from the fund to support eligible nonprofit organizations.
Here's how a Donor-Advised Fund typically works:
Establishment
A donor opens a DAF account with a sponsoring organization, which can be a community foundation, a charitable arm of a financial institution, or a standalone charitable organization.
Contribution
The donor contributes assets to the DAF, which can include cash, stocks, real estate, or other appreciated assets.
Tax Deduction
When the donor makes a contribution to the DAF, they receive an immediate tax deduction for the full value of the donation, subject to IRS guidelines and regulations. This can be especially advantageous for donors who want to maximize their charitable deductions in a given tax year.
Investment
The funds within the DAF are typically invested and can potentially grow over time.
Grantmaking
The donor can recommend grants from the DAF to eligible nonprofit organizations of their choice.
Anonymity
Donors can choose to remain anonymous when making grants from their DAF, allowing them to support causes without public disclosure if they prefer.
Donor-Advised Funds offer several advantages for donors, including simplified giving, potential tax benefits, and flexibility in managing charitable giving.
Thruline Networks is an Impact Venture Studio that focuses on companies building solutions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and 9 Planetary Boundaries, primarily in Circular Economy and Waste to Value solutions. Currently, many of the companies, ecosystems and markets are immature, under-developed and under-resourced. They need all types of support and insights to bring their potential solutions to bear. These organizations find existing venture funding and debt models to be challenging and suboptimally structured for their unique needs. Leaders of these organizations often lack connections to funders and other potential solid partners. Industry infrastructure / ecosystem connections are in early stages while solutions are often inter-connected and require systematic change. Research is expensive and time consuming. Collaboration is difficult to organize. Communication of needs and opportunities is difficult to execute.
The Thruline Donor Advised Fund (Thruline DAF) is a purpose built solution to provide catalytic financial support to startups, entrepreneurs and ecosystems to cross the valley of death. The entity exists to:
- Explore and implement innovative financial solutions
